Prompt library best practices: stop rewriting the same prompts

The TidyChats Team, August 19, 2026. 7 min read

PromptsProductivityWorkflows

Most people retype their best prompts from memory every time, losing the little refinements that made them work. A prompt library fixes that: you save a prompt once, improve it over time, and insert it anywhere in a keystroke.

Capture prompts as you go

The best prompts are the ones you have already written. When a prompt produces a great result, save it immediately. In TidyChats you type // to open the picker, and new prompts are one click away from the composer.

Use placeholders for flexibility

Turn a one-off prompt into a template with {{placeholders}}. Instead of 'Summarize this contract for a tenant', write 'Summarize this {{document type}} for a {{audience}}'. One template now covers dozens of situations, and TidyChats asks you to fill in each value on insert.

Organize with categories and tags

  • Category = the job to be done (Writing, Coding, Research, Email).
  • Tags = cross-cutting traits (tone:formal, lang:spanish, short).
  • Keep titles action-oriented so the picker is scannable.

Chain prompts for repeatable workflows

Some tasks are really a sequence: outline, then draft, then critique, then polish. Group those prompts into a chain and trigger the whole flow with .. instead of running each step by hand.

Treat your prompt library like code: version the ones that matter, delete the ones that do not, and keep improving the rest. Over a few weeks it becomes one of the most valuable things in your browser.
