How to see your Claude usage limit and when it resets
By The TidyChats founder · · 7 min read
Short answer: on a paid Claude plan, click your initials in the bottom left of claude.ai, then go to Settings → Usage (or open claude.ai/settings/usage directly). As of October 2026, that page shows two things: Current session, which is how much of your five-hour session limit you've used plus the time left in that session, and Weekly limits, which tells you when your weekly limit resets. Anthropic lists it for Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans in its usage limit best practices article.
Quick disclosure: I build TidyChats, a browser extension for Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Grok, and one of the things it does is put these numbers under the chat box. I'll stick to Claude's own page first, because it's the source of truth and it's free.
Where to find your usage in Claude
- Open claude.ai in your browser and sign in.
- Click your initials in the bottom left corner.
- Choose Settings, then the Usage tab.
At the top you'll see the plan usage section with progress bars. The Current session bar fills up as you chat and shows how long until the session ends. The Weekly limits part shows how much of the week you've used and the day and time it resets. If you've turned on usage credits (more on those below), the same page shows how much of those you've spent, kept separate from your plan's included usage, according to Anthropic's page on managing usage credits.
Depending on your plan, you may see more than one weekly bar. Anthropic's article mentions a weekly reset "for all models" and a separate one for a specific model if your plan includes it. My advice: read the labels on your own page rather than a screenshot from someone else's, because the bars differ by plan.
How the five-hour session limit works
Claude's main limit is per session. Anthropic's Pro plan page puts it plainly: "Your session-based usage limit will reset every five hours." The same page says Pro gives you more usage per session than Free, and that the number of messages you can send varies with message length, the length of files you attach, the length of your current conversation, and the model or feature you use.
That last part is why there's no fixed message count. Two people on the same plan can hit the limit after very different numbers of messages. One sends short questions in fresh chats; the other keeps a 60-message thread going with a PDF attached. The session bar on the Usage page is the only reliable way to know where you stand.
How the weekly limit works
On top of the session limit, paid plans have a weekly limit. For Pro, Anthropic says the weekly usage limit "applies across all models" and that weekly limits "reset at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account." So your week doesn't start when you subscribe or when you send your first message on Monday. It's a fixed slot, and the Usage page shows when it is.
In practice the two limits catch different people. If you work in bursts, the five-hour session is the one you'll see. If you use Claude heavily every day, the weekly bar is the one to watch, because once it's full, a fresh session doesn't help until the weekly reset.
| Limit | What it covers | When it resets | Where to see it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current session | Your usage in the current five-hour session | Every five hours | Settings → Usage, "Current session" |
| Weekly limit | Your usage across the week (all models, plus a separate bar for some plans) | A fixed day and time assigned to your account | Settings → Usage, "Weekly limits" |
| Length limit | How long a single chat can get (the context window) | Doesn't reset; start a new chat | Not on the Usage page |
Usage limits aren't the same as length limits
People mix these up a lot. Anthropic's article on usage and length limits separates them: usage limits control "how much you can use Claude across all your conversations, while length limits control how long any single conversation can become." The length limit depends on the model's context window.
So if Claude tells you a chat is too long, waiting for a reset won't fix it. You need a new chat (ideally with a short summary of the old one pasted in). If Claude tells you you've reached your limit, a new chat won't fix it either. You need the reset.
Why people hit the limit sooner than expected
Anthropic's best practices article lists what eats into your usage: message length, file attachment size, current conversation length, tool usage (like Research and web search), model choice, effort level, artifact creation and use, and multi-step tasks.
The one that surprises people is conversation length. A long chat costs more per message than a new one, because Claude works with everything that came before in that chat each time you send something. A big attachment early in a thread keeps adding to that. If you want a rough feel for how large your pasted text is, the token counter gives you an estimate.
Anthropic's own suggestions boil down to a few habits, and I'd follow them before paying for more:
- Start a new chat when the topic changes. Don't keep one thread alive for a week.
- Batch related questions into one message instead of five short ones.
- Be specific up front, so you don't spend three replies correcting course.
- Put reference files in a Project's knowledge instead of attaching the same file again and again. Anthropic mentions caching benefits there. (If you're unsure what Projects are for, I wrote about Projects vs folders in Claude.)
- Pick a lighter model or lower effort for simple tasks.
What happens when you reach it
Per Anthropic, if you hit your usage limit, "you'll need to wait for it to reset, upgrade your plan, or purchase usage credits." Usage credits are available on Pro, Max 5x and Max 20x, and you turn them on or off and watch them in the same Settings → Usage page. Honestly, for most people waiting for the session to reset is fine. The weekly limit is the one where credits or a bigger plan start to make sense, and the Usage page tells you exactly how far away that reset is before you decide.
Keeping an eye on it without opening Settings
The annoying part isn't reading the Usage page. It's remembering to check it before you start a long task, not after Claude stops you halfway.
That's why I added a usage tracker to TidyChats (version 1.10, free). On claude.ai, the thin line under the chat box shows something like "Session 42% · resets in 1h 12m · Week 18%", and the session % also sits on the TidyChats icon in your toolbar. It turns amber when either number reaches 70% and red at 90%. Click it and you get the session (five hours) and the week with their reset times, plus a button that opens Claude's usage page.
A few honest limits. It reads the same numbers Claude's own Usage page shows, with your logged-in session, and refreshes every 2 minutes and after each reply, so it's only as accurate as Claude's data. If it can't read the numbers for your account, it shows nothing rather than guessing. It shows one weekly figure, so if your plan has a separate per-model weekly bar, check that one on Claude's page. And it only works in the browser on claude.ai, not in the desktop or mobile apps. You can switch it off in Settings under Show Claude usage. The rest of what TidyChats does on Claude is on the Claude page, and the full list is on features.
Questions people ask
Where is the usage page in Claude?
Click your initials in the bottom left of claude.ai, then Settings → Usage. Anthropic lists it for Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans.
When does my Claude limit reset?
The session limit resets every five hours. The weekly limit resets at a fixed day and time assigned to your account; the Usage page shows both.
Does Claude's free plan have a usage page?
Anthropic's article only names paid plans (Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise) for Settings → Usage, and it doesn't describe the page for Free. Free accounts have usage limits too: Anthropic describes Pro as giving more usage per session than Free.
Why did I hit my Claude limit after only a few messages?
Long conversations, large attachments, tools like Research and web search, heavier models and higher effort all use more of your limit per message. Starting a new chat for a new topic usually helps the most.
Can I get more usage without waiting?
On Pro, Max 5x and Max 20x you can buy usage credits, or you can upgrade your plan. Otherwise you wait for the reset shown on the Usage page.
